Rallye Monte-Carlo 2024

25 – 28 January 2024

WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo

The most unpredictable rally of the year. Relatively straight-forward asphalt roads in the French Alps are complicated by winter weather which places an emphasis on cunning tyre choices. Frequently, the skill to drive slowly as fast as possible is the key to success. Little is simple in the high mountains!

About the rally

Rallye Monte-Carlo is the WRC’s jewel in the crown and the oldest event in the calendar.

First run in 1911, it was designed to promote Monte-Carlo as a tourist destination, with competitors starting from different European cities before gathering in Monaco.

Although it is, essentially, an asphalt event, unpredictable mountain weather brings varied conditions. Competitors must expect snow, ice and dry asphalt – sometimes encountering all of these conditions within the very same stage!

Crews must balance the need for grip in winter weather with that required for dry asphalt. Shrewd tyre selection providing the best compromise for frequently changing conditions is key – and that’s where the ability to ‘read’ conditions pays dividends.

Adding to the challenge is the fact that there is no mid-leg service on any of the rally’s four days. Once the crews depart Monaco’s picturesque harbour in the morning, only they can work on their cars, using tools carried in the vehicle, until they return in the evening.
